AWARDS

 

The Golden Valley High School Music Program recognizes the outstanding achievements of some of its members each season as the staff and students select people for the following awards.

 

MARCHING SEASON AWARDS

 

Rookie of the Year Award 

This award is presented to the person from each section (woodwind, brass, percussion, color guard) who best demonstrates outstanding marching or musicianship during their first year in the program.

 

Most Improved Award 

This award is presented to the person from each section (woodwind, brass, percussion, color guard) who demonstrates the most improvement in their marching or musicianship over the course of the marching season.

 

Most Outstanding Award 

This award is presented to the person from each section (woodwind, brass, percussion, color guard) who best demonstrates outstanding marching and musicianship throughout the entire marching season.

 

Esprit de Corps Award 

This award is presented to the person who best exemplifies what the Golden Valley High School Marching Band is all about; passion for music, the strive for excellence, and a desire to have fun! Award winners are chosen on the basis of their overall attitude on the field and the effect they have as leaders.

 

Most Outstanding Marcher Award 

This award is presented to the person that best exemplifies the skill and perfection of marching basics; both in basic blocks and the show.

 

CONCERT SEASON AWARDS

 

John Philip Sousa Award 

This award is the highest honor given by the Golden Valley High School Band. It is presented in the spring to the senior student who best portrays the band's definition of a fine musician over their four years at Golden Valley High School. This will include his or her performance ability, personal attitude, participation in several band organizations, willingness to help others, consideration and respect for fellow band members and staff, and their responsibility to their school in general. The winner of this award receives a trophy and their name is permanently engraved on a plaque that is hung in the music rehearsal room.

 

Louis Armstrong Jazz Award

This award is the highest honor for jazz students.  It is presented in the spring to a senior in recognition of the highest achievement in jazz performance.  Students who win the Louis Armstrong Award demonstrate excellent musicianship, technique, improvisational skills, and leadership.  The winner of this award receives a trophy and their name is permanently engraved on a plaque that is hung in the music rehearsal room.

 

Most Improved Award 

This award is presented to a woodwind, brass, and percussion player that has each demonstrated the most musical improvement over the course of the school year.

 

Director’s Choice Award 

This award is presented to one student in each grade level (9-11) who best exemplifies the musical achievements, attitude, and work ethic that drive the Golden Valley High School music groups.

 

Outstanding Band Parents Award 

This award goes to the parent(s) who have most helped the Golden Valley High School Band, Orchestra, and Color guard programs over the year. Qualities of this person or persons include being active in the Band Boosters, volunteering to chaperone events, and helping out in the rehearsal room when needed. Without the winner or winners of this award, the music program would not be able to function!
